Luis Diego Gómez ( Spanish: Luis Diego Gómez ; 1944 - 2009 ) is a Costa Rican botanist , pteridologist and mycologist , "the father of modern Costa Rican botany."

Biography
Luis Diego Gomez was born July 18, 1944 in the city of San José in Costa Rica. He studied at the National Conservatory of Music, then entered the University of Loyola in Spain .
In 1963 he received a master's degree, three years later - a doctor's degree. Then Louis began to study zoology, botany and general biology at the University of Costa Rica .
From 1970 to 1985, he was director of the National Museum of Costa Rica, he was also a co - founder of the Costa Rican Academy of Sciences and the National Institute of Biological Diversity. In addition, Gomez founded the botanical magazine of the National Museum of Brenesia . On November 13, 2009 , at the age of 65, Luis Diego died from complications caused by leukemia .
Gomez has written about one hundred journal articles and several books. He was a specialist in fern plants and basidiomycete fungi.
