Sports career

From the age of 14 he began to perform in a double kayak. After winning the national championship at distances of 1000 and 10000 meters, athletes were selected for the national team at the same distances for the Helsinki Summer Olympics (1952), where they became two-time bronze medalists. Four years later, in Melbourne (1956), Drews was left without medals.

In 1954 he became the third at the World Cup (distance of 1000 m). Four-time champion of Germany on a double kayak at a distance of 1000 m (1952, 1953, 1954, 1956), 6-time - at a distance of 10 000 m (1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957).
