Network of Highways of the People’s Republic of China ( Chinese trade. 中國 國家 高速公路 網 , exercise. 中国 国家 高速公路 网 , pinyin : Zhōngguó guójiā gāosù gōnglùwǎng , pall. in the world and amounts to 142.5 thousand km (at the end of 2018) [2] . By the end of 2017, the total length of expressways was 136 thousand km, thereby taking the first place in the world in terms of length.

History
Initially, China planned to build a network of national highways for 35 thousand km. The construction began in 1988 , and was scheduled for completion by 2020. As of January 1, 1989, there were 147 km of highways in China, but as of January 1, 2008, the total length of roads was 53,600 km (about 8,000 km of which were built in 2007).
The main goals of the construction of the System of National Roads were 12 high-level highways: five meridional directions and seven latitudinal directions. 70% of highways were high-speed freeways. In 2005, the density of roads reached 19.5 km / 100 km² [3] [4] . The project was completed in 2007 [5] .
By the end of 2011, there were more than 4.1 million km of highways, including nearly 85,000 km of high-speed roads.
By the end of 2017, the total length of roads open for traffic exceeded 4770 thousand km, including 136 thousand km of expressways (in 2017 it increased by about 5000 km), built according to advanced standards , thereby speeding the network took first place in the world. [6]
By the end of 2018, the total length of the Chinese expressway network reached 142,500 km [7] - the world's largest longest expressway system, surpassing the total length of the US interstate highway system in 2011 (77,556 km in the United States). [8] . Many of the major expressways are parallel to the route of old Chinese national highways .
