Representatives of the family are common in the warm tropical regions of North and South America .

According to the database of The Plant List (as of July 2016), the family includes 2 genera and 8 species [2] :
- Cliftonia is a monotypic genus, the only representative of Cliftonia monophylla ( Lam. ) Britton
- Cyrilla - includes 7 species.
