Tadmore

Tadmor [1] [2] ( Arabic: تدمر ) is a city in the central part of Syria , located in the homonymous region of the province of Homs . It is located in an oasis, in the middle of the Syrian desert, 215 kilometers northeast of Damascus and 180 km southwest of the Euphrates River.

The ruins of ancient Palmyra , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are located about 500 meters southwest of the modern city center.

History

In 1929, , Director General of Antiquities of the French Mandate in Syria and Lebanon, began excavating the ruins of Palmyra and convinced the villagers to move to a newly built village, near the ancient city [3] . The resettlement was completed in 1932 [4] , which makes the ancient city of Palmyra accessible for excavation [3] , while residents settled in a new settlement with the same name (in Arabic) [5] .

Syrian Civil War

On March 27, 2016, Syrian troops, with the support of Russian special forces and the Russian Air Force, liberated Tadmor and its ancient part (Palmyra) from the armed formations of the Islamic State . Messages about the activity of IS fighters began to arrive on December 8, 2016. On December 9, fights were on the outskirts of Palmyra, IS fighters used shahid mobiles to break through the defense, it was reported that they used a tank without a tower filled with explosives. On December 8-9, the Syrian Air Force and the Russian Air Forces launched massive air strikes against the advancing militants, and the militants' offensive stopped. On December 9, the Russian military, part of the government troops, and part of the city’s residents left Palmyra. On December 10, the attack of the IS militants resumed, they managed to capture the elevators in the east of Palmyra, and on December 11, the militants took control of Palmyra [6] . On Monday, December 12, 2016, detachments of the armed groups of the Islamic State continued the advance from Palmyra in a westerly direction, the Arab publication Al-Mazdar reports. The terrorists took control of Palmyra on December 11, 2016. According to the publication, the terrorists also captured the settlements of al-Bayahrat and ad-Davva to the west of Palmyra and the Haiyan oil field. According to Talal Barazi, governor of the province of Homs , in which Palmira is located, 80% of the population were evacuated from the city [7] .
