Biography

Johann Jacob Reichard was born on August 7, 1743 in the German city of Frankfurt in the family of Johann Falentin Reichard. He received his primary education at a school in his hometown, in 1764 he entered the University of Gottingen , where he studied philosophy, biology and, then, medicine. Here he was influenced by Professor Yu. A. Murray , often accompanied him during geological and botanical trips. In April 1768, Jacob received his doctorate in medicine and began working as a doctor in Frankfurt. In 1773, Reichard became the superintendent of the library and botanical garden of the Senkenberg Society. From 1779 he worked in the city hospital. Reichard died on January 21, 1782 .

In 1777, Reichard prepared the 7th edition of the book of K. Linnaeus Genera plantarum . In it, he included not only the text of Linnaeus, but also several of his own botanical descriptions.

The herbarium of Johann Jacob Reichard was transferred to the Senkenberg Society and is currently kept at the Senckenberg Institute and Museum of Nature in Frankfurt (FR).
