Biography

The son of a key figure in the revolution of 1848–49, Lajos Kosuth , in the autumn of 1894, came to Hungary and made a tour of it. Everywhere he was met with great honors, everywhere at banquets and at rallies he gave speeches, developing in them the ideas of his father, that is, the independence of Hungary. At the banquet in Debrecen , after Kossuth's speech, the crowd sang a song insulting to the emperor. The liberal Ministry of Wackerle , although it declared that it would compel everyone to respect the laws of whatever name he was, but did nothing to counter. This was one of the main reasons for the resignation of the ministry, given to him against the clearly expressed will of the Chamber of Deputies. Despite the negative attitude towards the Austrian Empire, Kosuth, during his trip, took Hungarian citizenship and took the oath of allegiance to the emperor.

Was selected in the Reichstag. Since 1895, he was the leader of the “Independence Party and the 48th Year”, defending the old program of Lajos Kossuth, that is, the formation of a special state from Hungary, connected with Austria only through personal union. At the end of 1904 he was elected chairman of the committee of the united opposition. Elections to the Reichstag in January 1905 gave the opposition a majority and forced the Tisza government to resign, launching the Hungarian crisis of 1905-1906 .

King Franz Joseph I , among other political figures, invited Kossuth to himself, but the agreement did not take place, and Kossuth did not receive a proposal to form a cabinet. In the government of Sandor Wekerle served as Minister of Commerce from April 8, 1906 to January 17, 1910.

The growth of the Social Democratic Party created an opposition standing to the left of Kossuth, and his relations with it soon deteriorated. Kossuth spoke out not only against socialism, but also against the immediate introduction of universal suffrage. In 1909, his Independence Party split into wings under the command of Kossuth and Gyula Just. In 1913, when they were reunited by Mihai Károlyi , Kosuth had practically no significant influence on politics.
