Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology

Skoltech was established on October 25, 2011. The founders of the new institute were the following parties:

• Russian School of Economics
• Open Joint-Stock Company Rusnano
• Open Joint Stock Company “Russian Venture Company”
• State Corporation "Bank for Development and Foreign Economic Affairs"
• Fund for the Promotion of the Development of Small Forms of Enterprises in the Scientific and Technical Sphere
• RAS Scientific Center in Chernogolovka ^[6]

The first rector of Skoltech was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Edward Crowley . In 2012, Skoltech enrolled the first 20 students for a pilot three-year master's program, and the first year students studied at foreign universities: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Imperial College London , Swiss Higher Technical School of Zurich and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology ) ^[7] . After the first year of study, these students joined a new set of 50 graduate students ^{[8] [9]} .

In the summer of 2015, the first graduation of students who graduated from a master's program in Skoltech ^{[10] took place} . By the fall of 2015, there were 218 masters and 87 graduate students at Skoltech ^[11] .

In February 2016, the new rector of Skoltech was Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Kuleshov ^[1] .

The Institute prepares masters and graduate students in the field of information technology , energy , biomedicine , the space industry and new production technologies ^[12] .

Scientific research is carried out in the framework of the centers of science, innovation and education (TSNIO) - units uniting the faculty, researchers, students, as well as specialists from Russian and foreign universities. ^[13]

Skoltech collaborates with high-tech companies and institutions in Russia and abroad; internships at manufacturing companies and research laboratories are part of student learning ^[14] .

Skoltech supports the implementation of research projects of Skoltech students and other universities in production ^[15] .

Georgy Malinetskii expressed the view that there was no need to create a new university, copying the Western model of education; science should be developed on the basis of existing Russian universities ^{[16] [17]} . Roger Kornberg , co-chair of the scientific and technical council of the Skolkovo Innovation Center, also disputed the need for cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ^[18] . The practice of attracting outside lecturers instead of creating their own core of teachers is also criticized ^[18] . A large number of foreigners among Skoltech teachers, according to businessman Alexei Filimonov, means that Skoltech will not be integrated into the Russian academic environment ^[16] . At the same time, the repatriation of Russian scientists working abroad, which was declared as one of the goals of creating Skoltech, is slow ^[16] .

Among Skoltech's achievements, high publication activity and productive cooperation with the Academpark and Moscow State University are noted ^[19] .
