It lives in the rivers of the basin of the Arctic Ocean and its seas. The outward resemblance to herring fish became the cause of the local names for the fish: in the Pechora basin it is called “Zeldy”, on the Yenisei - “Seldyushka”.
It has small dimensions: length, on average, 16-17 cm, up to a maximum of 25 cm. Weight about 50 grams, although there are individuals weighing up to 150 grams. Lake White Sea vendace, as a rule, is even smaller. Sometimes there is a mixture of vendace with whitefish. Such a fish has larger sizes and the weight of an individual can reach 215-300 grams.
The body is narrow; at the same time, the belly is more convex than the back. The back is gray-blue, the sides are silvery, the belly is white; dorsal and caudal fins gray, the rest white with a blackish apex. The upper jaw is shorter than the lower and the mouth is facing up.
Spawns, as a rule, on sandy and sandy-clay soil, in places of mild currents. Each female tosses from 7,000 to 18,000 eggs. The caviar is yellowish, with a diameter of about 1.5 mm. Female maturity occurs in the third year. Spawning occurs in late summer and autumn, depending on the habitat.
It feeds on plankton , small insects and their larvae.
