Since 1843 - a member of the chamber in which he belonged to the opposition, but fought against the patronizing tariff of Kossuth ; in 1848, he served as a comrade of the Minister of Finance. When the uprising was crushed in 1849, he fled, but in 1850 he was pardoned and returned to Hungary.
Here he helped to regulate the Tisza River, organized provincial agricultural unions, took an active part in building credit institutions, and vigorously defended the autonomy of the Protestant church, which was threatened by a patent in 1859. At the Andrássy’s constitutional transliteration ministry of February 17, 1867, he was assigned the ministry of finance.
In 1870 he was appointed Imperial Minister of Finance, in November 1871 - the Hungarian Minister-President. When it was discovered that he was abusing his influence for his own enrichment with state loans and purchases, as well as with the management of railways, he was forced to resign (December 1872).
Since 1875 he was a member of the upper house. He wrote several works in Hungarian: on state property (Buda, 1869), on public affairs of Hungary (Pest, 1846 and 1873–1875), and others. His Bankfrage (Pest, 1876) and Graf Stefan Scéchenyi were translated into German. "(Ibid., 1875).
