Biography
Sakyp Sabanji was born in the village of Akchakaya, near the city of Kayseri , in the family of the cotton trader Haji Omer Sabancı, 1906-1966 and his wife Sadika Sabancı'nın, 1910-1988. He was the third child. In 1957 , Sakyp married his cousin Turkan Jivelek.
Towards the end of his life, Sakip Sabanji became the owner of most supermarkets in Turkey and the richest person in this country. In the list of billionaires of Forbes magazine for 2004, Sakyp Sabanji - in 150th place. Since the 1980s, the Sabanci Group managed by it has become one of the leading financial institutions in the world. Sabanji Holding controls 64 companies, including textile, food, travel companies, paper and packaging, automobiles, chemicals, tobacco, cement factories, insurance companies and banks. The Sabancı Group also has partnerships with some of the most well-known multinational companies, such as Hilton Worldwide , Bridgestone , DuPont , Philip Morris International , Bekaert, HeidelbergCement , IBM , BNP Paribas , Dresdner Bank , Carrefour and International Paper .
Sakip Sabancı made a huge contribution to Turkish public education, in 1999 he founded Sabanci Private University in Istanbul .
His collections of more than 320 Ottoman and Turkish paintings, statues and more than 400 samples of Ottoman calligraphy are exhibited at the Sakyp Sabanji Museum on the Bosphorus in the Emirgan district of Istanbul , in a mansion where he and his family lived for many years and which was transformed into a museum in 2002 [2] . In this mansion from 1884 until the outbreak of World War I , the Montenegrin embassy was located [3] .
In 1974, the Sabanci family founded the Sabanci Foundation, which works in the field of health, education and culture throughout Turkey.
Sakyp Sabanji died of cancer. He was buried in the Zinjirlikuyu cemetery in Istanbul .
