James Sowerby ( born James Sowerby ; 1757 - 1822 ) is an English botanist and mycologist , a well-known botanical illustrator .

Biography
James Sowerby was born in the London Lambeth district on March 21, 1757 in the family of John Sowerby and Arabella Goodrid. Sowerby decided to become an artist, in 1777 he entered the Royal Academy of Arts . Then he began to teach painting and paint portraits. Soon, James became interested in botanical illustration and began to study botany. He was noticed by some famous botanists, in 1786-1787 he created illustrations for the book of the French botanist Lerieux de Brutel . In 1787, Sowerby met William Curtis and began to illustrate articles in his Botanical Magazine . In 1788, James published a short guide to creating botanical drawings. The artist also met with J.E. Smith , D. Turner and W. Withering . Together with Smith, he was the author of the 36-volume book English Botany , the first volume of which was published in 1790. In 1793, Sowerby became a full member of the Linnaeus Society of London . In 1797, a series of illustrations of mushrooms with descriptions of colored figures of British fungi began to be published. In addition to botany, Sowerby was interested in conchology and mineralogy . In 1807, he was elected a member of the Geological Society. [one]
James Sowerby was married to Ann Brettingham de Carl, they had 9 children. Their two sons, George Brettingham and James de Carl , also became botanical and zoological artists. In 1815, Ann Brettingham died, five years later, James married Mary Catherine Reynolds. James died on October 25, 1822 in Lambeth. [one]
Herbarium specimens and unpublished manuscripts and illustrations by Sowerby are kept at the London Museum of Natural History (BM), Edinburgh Botanical Garden (E), the Linnaeus Society of London (LINN), and the Liverpool Museum (Liv). [2]
