The building of the Mariinsky Gymnasium in 1861-1903 on Moskovskaya Street

The predecessor of the institute (later university) library was the library of the Mariinsky Gymnasium. The library was organized at the opening of the gymnasium in 1861 by its director D. Zhavoronkov. He began to keep an inventory catalog of funds. The library was completed at the expense of donors, but all publications before being included in the fund underwent censorship selection so that their contents did not adversely affect young pupils [2] .

Despite the lack of allocation of funds for acquisition, only at the expense of donors in 1881, the library fund already totaled 2,436 storage units (1,385 items) [2] .

The library had 11 departments.

The new building of the Mariinsky Gymnasium of 1903 on the corner of Frolovskaya and Chistaya Streets

In the old gymnasium building on Moskovskaya Street, the library did not have its own separate room. Book racks stood along the inner wall of the assembly hall and in a small corridor leading to classes located in the southeast corner of the building. The entire reference fund was kept in the reception room, where teachers gathered for breaks. In 1903, a separate room was allocated for the library when moving to its own building on Frolovskaya Street .

In 1884, the post of librarian was introduced in the gymnasium . Prior to this book was issued by the head.

In 1902, the library stock consisted of 5566 storage units (2966 items). In the same year, through the efforts of subject teachers, a systematic catalog of funds began to be created [2] .

Since 1903, the board of trustees of the gymnasium began to allocate funds for the issuance of books. If in 1903, 300 rubles were allocated, then in 1907, 1,200 rubles were allocated [2] .

In 1905, the library was divided into two: fundamental and educational. In the same year, the library began to compile bibliographic reviews of its collections.

In 1908, all the property of the gymnasium library was insured.

In 1909, electric lighting was arranged in the library.

In 1917, the Mariinsky Gymnasium and its library were closed. The library fund went partially to private collections, and was partially sold out. Currently, a rare collection of the university’s scientific library holds several publications with stamps from the Mariinsky Gymnasium library. However, the fate of most of the library fund of the gymnasium is unknown.

Library of the Kursk State Pedagogical Institute (1934-1941)

Books that started the Institute’s library in 1934

The KSPI library was created at the end of 1934 . The library was allocated one room on the ground floor in the building of the former Kursk Mariinsky Gymnasium [3] [4] . The first 3 thousand educational literature came to the library from the Voronezh library collector and the Oryol library , fiction, books on history, the Russian language, literary criticism, by decision of the administration and party organization of the institute, were purchased at the bazaars from Komsomol students from September 1934 from private library holders years [5] . Famous history professors Rozental NN, who were sent to Kursk, also greatly assisted in the formation of the library fund. , Polosin I.I. from Moscow and associate professor of the Russian language Denisevich G.V. from Novgorod [6] .

In 1938, a reading room was opened in the library in the hostel of the institute on Gogol Street.

Since 1940, the library began to organize literary meetings with major Soviet writers. This year, the writer Novikov-Priboy A.S. met with students , and in 1941 - Serafimovich A.F. and Panferov F.I. [5] .

In the pre-war period, the fund of the institute library was small and did not satisfy students' needs for textbooks and other literature [7] .

In 1941, after the outbreak of World War II, part of the book fund, mainly textbooks, was transferred to the building of the medical institute , where the classes of the pedagogical institute began on September 1, since a hospital was located in its educational building on Radishchev Street [8] . Before the occupation of Kursk, part of the book fund was hidden in the cellars of the church and the church , and the most valuable editions were evacuated to Sarapul on October 2, 1941, and library staff were sent there [9] [10] . After the last graduation of students of pre-war recruitment, the institute and its library were closed [5] .

Scientific Library of the Kursk State Pedagogical Institute (1943-2004)

In 1943, the Kursk State Pedagogical and Teacher Institute was reopened in Kursk , and in 1944, the institute library subscription was opened [11] . The reading room was opened in 1945 [10] .

Since 1945, the scientific library began to create alphabetical and systematic catalogs , encrypting the BBK and processing books [10] .

By the beginning of the 1946 - 1947 school year, the library's book stock was 39,770 copies [12] .

In the post-war period, the library was completed from the library, independently purchased publications in bookstores, from individuals with cash on delivery, received abstracts of dissertations by Kursk scientists, brochures from the Knowledge Society (since 1947 ), educational and educational programs, and teaching aids [13] . Also in the post-war period, there has been a rapid increase in the volume of funds and areas of the scientific library, which was due to higher standards of book provision and the capacity of reading rooms of humanitarian higher educational institutions over other types of universities [14] .

In 1959, the library received the Mikrofoto microfilm viewer, after which it began to form its own microfilm collection. Some of the films were donated to the library by associate professor F. Lappo, among them a rare book edition of 1894 by I. Miklashevsky. “On the history of the economic life of the Moscow state. Settlement and agriculture of the southern outskirts of the 17th century. ” Also, the library began to order at the request of readers microfilms from the State Library of the USSR for temporary use [15] .

In 1960, the scientific library was given a collection of graphic publications from the closed Kursk Art and Graphic Pedagogical School. In the building of the art and graphic faculty, a point for the issuance of books and graphic publications is being created, and regular exhibitions of paintings by graduate artists of the institute are beginning to be held in the library [16] [17] .

In 1962, the fund of the scientific library reached 200,000 storage units [18] . At this time, the question of the need to allocate a new room for a new book depository became acute. A new reading room was also needed, the lack of capacity of which began to be felt by visitors to the library since 1958 [19] .

In November 1964, in accordance with the patronage of assistance , the scientific library completed the training library of the new school in the city of Kursk in the village of KZTZ (secondary school No. 1), transferring 300 copies of fiction and popular science literature from its collection [20] .

In 1972, a laboratory building was added to the building of the institute, where the scientific library was transferred in April, occupying the first (reading room for 250 seats, reference and bibliographic department, department of acquisition, processing and catalogs), basement (subscription) and basement (main book depository) floors. By this time, the library’s book stock already amounted to 221 510 copies, and 6.5 thousand people served the library per year [12] . In the same year, for the convenience of readers, the subscription was divided into two departments: for students and for teachers [13] .

In 1974, the library was the largest in Kursk , its fund totaled 310,000 books, 200 readers were served daily [21] . From the same year, the library begins to receive copyright copies of dissertations for the degree of candidates and doctors of sciences, which are defended at the institute.

In 1975, the library stock grew to 388,500 items, the annual service reached 5,700 readers, and the annual attendance was 234,000 people [22] .

In 1981–2002 , the library had the Sobesednik club, created from library staff, teachers of the Russian language, literature, and psychology departments, which was engaged in the promotion of reading, careful handling of print media [23], and discussion of topical issues in society [24] .

In 1996, the library became one of the winners of the Kursk regional competition of libraries on environmental education, thanks to mass events: brain rings , environmental games, and organizing views of environmental literature in the countryside [25] .

By the end of 2002, the library stock had 631,547 items, including textbooks - 281,750, scientific - 224,087, fiction - 122,926, foreign — 2,784, rare books - 5,010 [5] .

Book Monuments, Rare Books, and Manuscripts

Books from the rare fund of NB KSU

The department of the rare fund of the scientific library holds more than 8,000 publications of spiritual and material value, which have special historical, scientific, and cultural significance. Among such publications, one can note the original synopsis of Innocent Gisel " On the Beginning of the Slavic People " of 1674 and a copy of Svyatoslav's Book of 1073 , the Ostromirovo Gospel of 1056-1057 [43] .

Of the works of the 18th - 19th centuries , the library collection contains a large number of original typographic publications, the most significant of which are the works “The Code of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, according to which courts and reprisals in all cases in the Russian state are carried out”, 1725 , Dubrovina N. F. “ Crimea joining Russia 1775-1777: rescripts, letters, reports and communiques, " Golikova I. Search Reference

Reader Alphabetical, Subject and Systematic Catalogs of the NB KSU

The scientific library has a dual directory system:

  • general service alphabetical catalog ,
  • single electronic catalog .

Previously, the library also maintained traditional readers' alphabetical , systematic and subject catalogs, but with the launch of the electronic catalog in 2010 , these catalogs were preserved and not updated, but are still available to readers in the catalog sector of the reading room.

The electronic catalog allows readers to search through 12 bibliographic databases and 14 materials - types of resources [49] .

Due to the large volume of the library’s main fund and the large number of specialized departments for issuing publications and working with visitors in order to simplify and speed up the search for the necessary literature for readers, in 2014 the library published a guide to the funds and departments [12] .

Research Activities

The Scientific Library is a regional scientific center in the field of the history of book science and library science . Research activities are carried out by the library staff together with university scientists in the following areas:

  • Book publishing in the Central Black Earth Region at the end of the 19th century - 1930s [50] [51] [52] [53] [54] [55] .
  • Creation and development of a network of libraries in the Central Black Earth Region at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th centuries [56] [57] [58] [59] [60] .

The theoretical and methodological foundations of library science , methodological documents in the field of library science are being developed.

Research and practical work is being carried out in the field of conservation and restoration of library collections [45] , as well as consulting and methodological work.

Information Technology

The library uses the Ruslan automated library information system, which contains an electronic catalog of library funds, full-text electronic versions of the works of university scientists, full-text publications from a rare collection of the scientific library. Also, with the help of it, library readers can carry out an order for electronic delivery of documents from all libraries included in the ARBICON project [43] . Bibliographic description of publications is made in accordance with the national standard RUSMARC [61] . To simplify the accounting of users of the reading, scientific, electronic reading rooms and the resources used by them (both print and electronic), the automated client-server system "Accounting for ECH Users", created by the library computerization department, is used. [62] Legal systems are installed on the computers of library users, and licensed access to many remote electronic library systems is also provided.

RFID

Since 2014, the library has been using radio frequency identification (RFID) technology in its operations. The book fund of the faculties of art, economics and management, physical education and sports, and the faculty of law was tagged with RFID tags . All students of these faculties are issued electronic library cards ( plastic smart cards ). Thanks to this, open access to funds was organized at the subscription: students independently choose the publications they need on the shelves and, through self-service stations, arrange the issuance and delivery of books.

Digital Library

Since 1995, the scientific library has been creating its own electronic library based on the digitization of book monuments, rare books, manuscripts, as well as publications of the works of university scientists. The editions are digitized using the ATIZ BookDrive DIY book scanner, and the received e-books are placed in the full-text database of the Ruslan automated library information system and the Caliber e-book manager [63] [64] .

In ABIS “Ruslan”, two full-text databases of the electronic library are maintained :

  • monographic publications: works of scientists of KSU, book monuments, rare books and manuscripts,
  • periodicals: local history articles and publications on the history of KSU.

The Caliber e-book manager maintains one full-text database of the electronic library:

  • book monuments, rare books and manuscripts.
