The subtitle of the film (“The extraordinary adventures of the provincial youth Jura Otvertkin in the city of St. Petersburg at the dawn of ballooning”), as well as the captions, are decorated in retro style. The creation of the atmosphere of the beginning of the century is also facilitated by the cited verses of that period, in particular, A. Blok 's Aviator.
Some of the names mentioned refer to very real personalities of the duration of the film, some are intentionally changed. So, for example, aviator Valerian Bruten - like Evgraf Krutnya , Lidia Zadorova - Lidia Zvereva , von Braulbars - Kaulbars , reporter Vyshko-Vyshkovsky - Breshko-Breshkovsky , etc.

Story
Former student Jura Otvertkin, embraced by the romance of nascent aviation , leaves his native Tsarevokokshaysk to St. Petersburg to participate in the aeronautical exhibition . He succeeded in “losing” the father assigned to accompany the priest, Ilya. Having aggravated his natural resemblance to the wanted criminal at the barber , Yuri goes to the flying club and calls himself by the name of the hero of adventure stories - Ivan Pyramid.
There he, provoked by Colonel Otebyatnikov, challenges a masked man to a duel, but refuses to fight, having learned that his opponent is a noble aviator Bruten. The next day, Yuri and Bruten, already on the airfield, argue about the piloting technique. Yuri volunteers to prove his case in practice and almost became a victim of the disaster. By coincidence, he already read about this in the story and therefore managed to land the plane.
The desire to become a professional pilot is hampered by a lack of money, and the prize of 5,000 rubles for a record flight cannot be obtained without the relevant documents (pilot's certificate). Unable to break this vicious circle, Yuri gets a job at the Daedalus factory. Its owner, Shchetinkin, very sloppy pays both foreign workers and engaged pilots and interferes with the completion of the Kazarinov aircraft, demanding the payment of a forfeit.
Frustrated, Lydia asks the imaginary Pyramid (about the journeys of which rumored Yuri) to teach her to fly. In the restaurant they meet the former father Ilya, and now - the poet Ilya Tsarevokokshaysky. Yuri brings Lydia to the factory and confesses not only love, but also in his trick. At her request, Bruten takes under his guarantee the money of Ivan Pyramid in the bank.
Shchetinkin’s penalty was paid, the Kiev-Grad Kazarinov’s plane (probably meaning the “ Kiev Ship ” by I. Sikorsky ) was completed and the belated intervention of the Shchetinkin-sponsored police, who again attacked the Pyramid’s track, was no longer able to interfere with the flight St. Petersburg - Moscow.
