During World War II, Italian Somalia was occupied by British and South African forces during the East African Campaign in 1941, and the British administration began to operate on this territory. In November 1949, by UN decision, the territory was transferred for 10 years under the control of Italy , which was to prepare it for independence. On January 1, 1950, Italy gained control of its former colony.
The official languages of the territory were Italian and Somali (with the Arabic alphabet). Until October 21, 1954, the official flags were the flag of Italy and the UN flag; Italian was also used as the coat of arms; Since October 21, 1954, the Somali coat of arms, the UN flag and the Somali flag have been used for official purposes.
July 1, 1960 The Trust Territory of Somalia, and the State of Somaliland (formerly British Somalia ) merged into the Republic of Somalia . [2]
