Strabo mentions the salt lake Tatta on the border of Galatia and Cappadocia [2] .
Most of the year it is shallow (1-2 m) and the salt lake has an area of 1,500 km². It usually has a length of 80 km and a width of 50 km, the water level is 905 m above sea level .
The lake fills the tectonic hollow on the central plateau of Turkey. Two large streams flow into the Ace, and the lake is also fed by underground sources and rainfall, there are no rivers flowing out. Where canals and streams flow into the Ace, brackish swamps formed. In the summer, due to evaporation, the Ace loses most of its water, a layer of salt with an average thickness of 30 cm forms on a dry bottom. In winter, the salt again dissolves in fresh water, which the lake receives in the form of precipitation and runoff from surrounding lands.
Three salt mines on the lake produce about 70% of all salt consumed by Turkey. Salt mining determines the direction of industrial activity in the region, which is mainly associated with the purification and processing of salt. The lake is surrounded by cultivated land, only in the south and southwest the cultivation of the land is impossible due to the flooding of saline soils.
In 2001, Lake Tuz, along with the adjacent steppes, was declared a specially protected area. A large flamingo population nests on a group of islands in the southern part of the lake. In addition, a white-fronted goose nests here, and in the surrounding villages there is a steppe kestrel .
