Biography

Dawson Turner was born on October 18, 1775 in the family of banker James Turner and daughter of the mayor of Great Yarmouth, Elizabeth Kotman. He studied at a school in North Walsham , in 1793 he entered the Pembroke College of Cambridge University . Since 1796 he worked in his father’s bank. In the same year, Dawson married Mary Palgrave. They had 11 children, one of their daughters, Maria Dawson Turner, married the botanist W.J. Hooker .

In 1797, Turner was elected a member of the Linnaeus Society of London , in 1802 joined the Royal Society of London . In 1812, artist John Cell Kotman settled in Yarmouth, who later became a friend of Dawson. He also taught Turner and his children how to draw. In 1816, Dawson became a foreign member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences .

Since 1850, Turner lived in London . He died on June 20, 1858 in the Old Bromton area. Ten days before his death, his friend, a nerd, named Robert Brown after the Turner genus Dawsonia , died in honor of Turner.

The vast herbarium of algae collected by Turner is stored with Hooker's Herbarium at Kew Royal Botanic Gardens (K). Turner's library, numbering 8 thousand books, was sold at auctions in 1853 and 1859.
