Geography

Located on the right bank of the river of the same name, on the border of the district with the Magadan region . This is the most remote village in the Bilibino region, the distance to the district center is 400 km, to the district center - 780 km.

History

The village was founded in 1944 to service the alternate aerodrome of the Alsib route section [2] .

Representatives of the indigenous peoples of the North are 713 people, most of whom are Evens . Children under the age of 16 years - 242 people [12] .

Economics and social infrastructure

The main occupation of local residents is reindeer husbandry and fishing, hunting and fur trade. Here is based the municipal agricultural enterprise "Oloy". The weather station is functioning.

The village has a secondary school, a department of national decorative and applied arts of the Bilibino School of Arts, a local hospital, a post office, a communications center, a culture center, a hotel with 21 seats, a bakery shop.

The current Orthodox church of St. Sergius of Radonezh [13] .

Transport

There is no permanent road to the settlement. The delivery of fuel and food was previously carried out by river during floods from the territory of the Magadan Region; since 2011, a seasonal winter winch has been arranged, connecting Omolon with Bilibino [15] [16] . In the future, the federal highway Kolyma-Anadyr under construction will pass through the village [17] .

Communication

On the territory of the settlement, broadcasting of six television channels (First, Russia-2, Culture, Sports, NTV, STS), as well as four radio stations was organized.

Archaeological finds

In the village area there is a two-kilometer Mammoth cliff, which is an exposure of loam layers pierced by huge ice lenses, from where the remains of mammoths , woolly rhinos and other prehistoric animals are thawed annually.

In 1982, in the vicinity of the village, locals discovered an iron-stone meteorite weighing 250 kg, which is a rare type of pallasite . The find was called “ Omolon ” [18] ; it is currently on display at the Museum of Natural History of the North- Eastern Research Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Magadan [19] .

Climate

In Omolon, the absolute temperature minimum in Chukotka was −61 ° C [20] . Moreover, summer is one of the warmest in the subject of the Federation.
