The final picture is different from the book - the main character tragically dies - according to Olga Zhulina, if it were not for the pressure of the Soviet government in those years, Bykov would have finished his book in this way. [1] According to the director, Anton killed Zosia, because " rolling downhill deeper, he realized that he could not take her with him, breaking her inner integrity, persuading her to go down one level with him ."

The girl, our heroine, is a village girl. She is “social. product of the Soviet era. " She is brought up correctly. Of course, religion was forbidden, but, nevertheless, a certain religiosity is present in it, which means that these are completely different parameters of spirituality. The boy, our main character, is a city guy. He grew up without parents, and he had to survive on the street. On the one hand, because of this feeling, when you need to constantly survive, in the war he feels “at ease”, and on the other hand, he accepts the circumstances and quickly adapts to them. I did not want to represent him as an unambiguous traitor. He is, first of all, a man who wants to live .

- Director and scriptwriter of the film Olga Zhulina

The shooting took place in Belarus, in the vicinity of the city of Minsk, in Logoisk and Smolevichi, where partisan detachments operated by Bykov’s story.

According to Olga Zhulina, the film, shot with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Russia, had a very limited budget, which affected the irregularities in the visual range and the schematic nature of the script, as well as the lack of extras.

The film aroused interest even before the release, despite the lack of pre-rental advertising and the year 2008/2009 rich in films about the war .

Suddenly, somewhere between the thriller “Killer” and the horror film “ Dead Snow ” (according to the annotation it is “A hilarious Norwegian horror story about Nazi zombies, shot almost a penny by a group of erudite enthusiasts”) , a film called “Doomed to War” is discovered. You can’t call this rental wide - there are only two halls, and there is no advertisement for the film (not like the Bastards , whose posters adorned all the bus stops at one time). But for some reason there is hope that this film will be worthy. Otherwise, to paraphrase its name, we can all be called doomed. Not for war, no. For amnesia. With all the ensuing consequences. .

- Alexander Vislov, senior researcher at the Institute of Art Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the Russian Federation, leading editor of the literary newspaper art department [2]

Prior to this, Vasily Bykov’s story “To Go and Do Not Return” was twice filmed by Belarusfilm Studio: in 1992, directed by Nikolai Knyazev, the film

“ Go and not return ” with Yulia Vysotskaya in the title role, and in 2004, directed by Eugene Setko, the film “ Go and not return ” with Yulia Kadushkevich in the title role.

Critics noted that both actresses in Belarusian films greatly lose to Nina Loshchinsky, and that the Russian film adaptation was better: “ Russian filmmakers did not reach the heights of the story, but in their approach there is a feeling that they feel Bykov’s heroes .” [3] At the same time, the Belarusian press extremely negatively assessed the film: “The on-duty movie, shot accurately, but without drive. Most of all it resembles a typical Soviet “planned unit”, and also that the director did not know that he would film Bykov . ” [four]
