Biography

Bernhard was the son of a jeweler, his brother Johann Heinrich was an engraver, and his brother Philip was a potter. He received his first lessons in art from his father, then spent four years in the workshop of the court artist Antoine Pan , concentrating on portraiture. In 1748 he went to travel. A year and a half he lived in Paris, where he worked in the workshops of Jean Restou and Charles Andre van Loo and was carried away by historical painting. In Venice and Rome he studied the heritage of old masters. In 1755 he returned to Berlin.

In 1757, the artist married, he had no children. Thanks to the life annuity from his father’s inheritance, Rode had financial independence and could determine the work technique, format and theme of his works. He could afford to give his paintings. Since 1785, Rode had health problems, but continued to work until his death.

The Berlin Enlightenment included representatives of the scientific community and friends of the publisher and writer Friedrich Nikolai: poet and philosopher Karl Wilhelm Ramler , philosophers Johann Georg Sulzer and Thomas Abbt , as well as occasionally Gotthold Efraim Lessing and Moses Mendelssohn . Bernhard Rohde did not enter directly into this circle, but was friendly with many enlighteners.
