Biography
Gary Jurofsky was born on August 19, 1970 in the city of Detroit, USA. His childhood passed in the town of Oak Park in Michigan [4] . "Awakening" with Gary Jurofsky happened in the early 1990s. His stepfather, who worked as a clown in a circus, once invited Gary on a tour, during which Gary was shocked at how cruel the circus animals were [2] . He began to explore this topic, in particular the handling of animals in the meat industry. Under the influence of the information received, Gary became a vegetarian and then vegan [4] . In 1996, Jurofsky founded the Animal Deserve Absolute Protection Today and Tomorrow ("Animals deserve full protection today and tomorrow"). In 2001, the organization numbered about 2,200 members [4] .
On March 30, 1997, Jurofsky, together with 4 members of the Animal Liberation Front , attacked a fur farm in Blenheim (Ontario, Canada) and freed 1542 minks [2] . The financial damage to the farm amounted to about 500,000 Canadian dollars [5] . In 1999, Jurofsky was arrested by Canadian police and sentenced to six months in prison. [6] Jurofsky spent 77 days in a maximum security prison [2] . He later admitted that the prison experience made him even more sympathetic and understand the suffering of animals [5] .
In 2000, Jurofsky received a $ 10,000 grant from PETA to create and broadcast a commercial called Animal Slavery, Known as the Circus. The video was shown 69 times on local US channels [4] .
In 2001, Jurofsky was forced to interrupt his activities for three months due to financial problems. In one of the interviews of this period, he stated that he was "heavily in debt" and that he owed more than $ 30,000 [4] . In early 2002, due to financial problems, Jurofsky resigned as head of the organization he founded. Just the day after that, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk phoned him and offered a job. March 20, 2002 Jurofsky became the official lecturer of PETA in the USA. In an open letter sent by Jurovski on May 28, 2002, he wrote: “[receive] a call and / or a request from Ingrid was tantamount to Don Corleone calling you. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse ” [7] [8] . Some supporters of Jurofsky considered his decision to join PETA a betrayal, as he had previously criticized large animal rights organizations [8] . In 2005, as a result of a conflict with the leadership of PETA, the organization stopped funding and Jurofsky left its ranks.
In an interview [9] given in 2006, Jurofsky criticized the United States Animal Welfare Society , as well as the PETA methods used personally by Ingrid Newkirk.
