Biography

Teak came from a family of artisans. Teak's father, a cable master, was an educated man and owned a small home library with writings from the Enlightenment . Parents made sure that their sons Christian Friedrich and his older brother Ludwig , who later became a famous writer, studied in a Berlin gymnasium. For six years, Teak studied with the sculptor Heinrich Betkober and studied drawing at the Berlin Academy of Arts. After graduation, Tick worked in the workshop of Shadov . Thanks to Shadov’s recommendation, Teak received a small scholarship for a trip to Italy, but because of the war with Napoleon he ended up in Paris and entered the workshop of Jacques-Louis David , where he copied ancient Greek and ancient Roman samples.

On the recommendation of Humboldt, in 1801, Thicke ended up in Weimar , where he created a somewhat idealized bust of Johann Wolfgang Goethe . In nearby Jena, Thicke met the Schlegel brothers, who were friends with his brother Ludwig. In the winter of 1801, Teak was again in Berlin, where he successfully completed at least six orders for portrait busts. Tick refused the order for a portrait of Queen Louise , because he did not want to compete with his teacher Shadov , who by that time had already created a bust of Louise and the famous sculpture group “Princess” . Returning then to Weimar, Thicke began work on a series of portraits for the city palace of the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. In February 1803, Thicke had a short passionate affair with the then-successful married writer Charlotte von Alefeld .

In 1803, Teak was periodically in Berlin, but also visited Vienna , Munich and finally in Italy. In Rome, Teak studied classical patterns, but soon began to take orders and produced a number of portraits, including Alexander von Humboldt , who had recently returned from America. In the spring of 1809, Thicke found himself in Switzerland, where he worked on a portrait of the philosopher Friedrich Schelling . In 1811, Teak returned to Rome, where he met with Berlin sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch and opened a workshop with him.

In 1819, Thicke returned to Berlin and worked in the same workshop with Rauch. In 1820, Teak was promoted to professor at the Prussian Academy of Arts. His major independent project was the sculptural decoration of the drama theater on the Gendarmenmarkt .

Little is known about Tik's personal life. However, his late marriage became a scandal: at the age of 70, Tick married a wealthy young girl of 20 years. One of his creditors was thus hoping to get his debt. The marriage was soon dissolved, and Thicke died in solitude and bitterness.
