Biography

Johannes Röper was born on April 25, 1801 in the city of Doberan (now Bad Doberan ).

He studied with his father-priest and at the Lübeck gymnasium. At the age of 16, he entered Rostock University , where he began to study biology. In 1819 he moved to the University of Berlin . He studied at the University of Halle for several years, then at the University of Gottingen . In Galle, Röper met von Schlechtendahl . In March 1823, he became a doctor of medicine. In 1826 he visited France and Italy , in Paris he met A. von Humboldt and A. Jussieux . He acquired the herbarium of Lamarck , later combined it with his own.

Then Röper was appointed associate professor at the University of Basel, and in 1829 became a full professor. In 1836 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy, then he returned to Rostock , where he replaced G. G. Fleroke as a professor of general biology. In 1837, the University of Tübingen awarded Röper an honorary doctorate in biological sciences. In 1846, he became the chief librarian of the University of Rostock.

On June 19, 1880, Röper suffered a stroke, after which he was forced to give up work. On March 17, 1885, he died after a second stroke.
