“Areas of Darkness” ( The Dark Fields , 2001; Russian translation 2008) - the first novel by the Irish writer Alan Glynn ( Eng. Alan Glynn ). First published in English in 2001 by Little, Brown and Company Publishing House . The Russian translation of the novel was released in 2008 . In 2011, director Neil Burger, based on the novel, shot the film " Limitless ", which in the Russian box office was called "Areas of Darkness." In anticipation of the film adaptation, the novel was reprinted.

Structure of the novel
The novel is divided into 28 chapters, combined in 4 parts. The book is dedicated to the Irish singer Enya ( Eng. Enya ).
The narration is conducted on behalf of Eddie Spinola, he recalls how his life has changed since the start of taking the psychotropic drug "MDT-48."
Story
One day, Eddie meets Vernon Gant, the brother of his ex-wife. According to Vernon, he started a drug trade and got a job as a consultant in a pharmaceutical company. In the meantime, Vernon offers Eddie to try a new medicine that improves brain efficiency . Knowing Vernon, Eddie at first refuses, but then takes the pill. The effect is not long in coming. The next day, he comes to Vernon for the next batch. However, having gone away for a while, on his return, Eddie finds Vernon dead. After calling the police, he searches the apartment and finds a hiding place with MDT-48, after which Eddie’s life changes dramatically.

Neil Burger ’s film “Fields of Darkness” uses the main idea and characters of the novel, however, a number of events and the ending are changed.
