History
The museum was founded in 1983 by Jörgos Anemoannis and was conceived as a place that can accommodate and preserve exhibits, a literary and epistolary heritage associated with the name of the writer and thinker Nikos Kazantzakis .
Until the establishment of the Kazantzakis Museum, the only place where visitors could get acquainted with the thinker's heritage was a small exhibition at the Historical Museum of Crete , in the Kalokayrinnos mansion in Heraklion , the creation of which Kazantzakis himself bequeathed back in 1956.
The village of Mirtia, 20 km south of Heraklion, was not chosen by chance for exposure, because the generic roots of the Kazantzakis family come from it. In place of his father’s former home, Jorgos Anemoannis, a fellow countryman of Kazantzakis, built a separate museum building, which was inaugurated on June 27, 1983.
In 2009, the museum was thoroughly renovated and currently offers visitors a new exhibition of its collections. Architects I. Psomadakis and M. Marina took part in the reconstruction of the museum, D. Kalokiris performed the graphic design, and Dr. L. Katzopulou (Chatzopoulou) was the author of the texts and the editor.
The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (80%) and national funds (20%).
