Biography

Claude Miller was born on February 20, 1942 in Paris into a Jewish family [1] . In 1961 he entered the Institute of Cinematography (L'Institut des hautes études cinématographiques, IDHEC).

Since the mid-1960s, he worked as an assistant director, participating in the filming of films by Marcel Carne , Michel Deville , Jean-Luc Godard . In 1976 he shot his first full-length film, "The Best Way to March." For this film, the director was nominated for two Cesar awards - as a director and screenwriter. Over the years of creative activity, he was nominated 15 times for the César Award, seven of them as the best director, but received the award only once for the script of the film “Under Preliminary Investigation” (1981, together with Michel Odiar and Jean Erman [2] ) Miller 's painting “Winter Holidays” (1998) was awarded the prize of the jury of the Cannes Film Festival . He acted as an actor in several films by Godard, Truffaut and others.

In 2007-2010 he was president of the largest French film school La Fémis (formerly IDHEC ). For twenty years (1993–2012) he headed the Europa Cinemas network, which unites arthouse cinemas supporting European cinema [3] .

Died of cancer in Paris on April 4, 2012 .
