The legend of the mountain miracle
Simon Tanner lived in Egypt at the end of the 9th century and, like many Copts Christians , was engaged in handicraft. The type of activity in which he was engaged and which has been common in Cairo so far, also included other production processes, thanks to which Simon is known also under other nicknames relating to the leatherwork business - the Tanner , the Shoemaker .
Khalif Al-Muizz, who reigned in Cairo in 972–975, invited religious leaders of different denominations to participate in debates in his presence. At one of these meetings with the participation of Pope Abraham and Jew Yakub ibn Killis (in other versions of this story his name was Moses) the victory was awarded to Abraham. Out of revenge, Ibn Killis quoted Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew ( 17:20 ) “if you have faith with a mustard seed and say to this mountain:“ Go from here to there, ”and it will go; and nothing will be impossible for you ”and asked the pope to prove the truth of his faith in this way. Hearing this, the caliph asked Abraham if his Gospel says so, and when he confirmed this, he demanded that such a miracle be performed by the Pope, otherwise Abraham and all Copts would be killed. The patriarch asked for three days to prepare.
Abraham gathered monks, priests and elders and told them to pray for three days. On the morning of the third day, Abraham prayed at the Hanging Church , when the Virgin Mary appeared to him and told him to go to a big market and find a one-eyed man with a waterskin there. That he can make a miracle. Abraham obeyed and met Simon the Tanner in the place described to him, who snatched one eye out for himself, guided by the injunction from the Gospel of Matthew ( 5:29 ). One of your members perished, and not your whole body was thrown into Gehenna. ”
Abraham ordered Simon to follow him to the mountain along with the caliph and soldiers. There, Simon told Abraham three times to shout " Lord, have mercy, " each time crossing the mountain with a cross. The patriarch followed this advice and the mountain rose. Having performed a miracle, Abraham turned around in search of Simon, but he disappeared. The Caliph recognized the truth of the Christian faith, and since then, in memory of this event, the Coptic Orthodox Church has been observing three additional days before the beginning of Advent .
In memory
The main source of Simone the Tanner and the miracle he accomplished is the biography of the patriarch Abraham, included by Sevir ibn al-Mukaffa in the " History of the Patriarch of Alexandria ".
In 1989–1991, Coptic priests and archaeologists searched for the remains of Simon the Tanner. They assumed that Simon was buried in the al-Habash cemetery in Old Cairo , but on August 4, 1991, Simon’s skeleton was found during the restoration of the Church of the Virgin Mary in Babylon el-Darag Coptic Cairo .
Simon Tannery is dedicated to monasteries in Cairo and Aswan .
