The Governor of Texas ( Texas Governor of Texas ) is the chief executive and commander in chief of the armed forces of the state of Texas . The governor can either approve or veto bills passed by the state legislature , which consists of two chambers - the Senate and the House of Representatives. The governor also has the right to convene state legislature meetings.

In the XIX and XX centuries, the term of the governor ranged from two to four years. According to the current constitution of the state of Texas [2] , the governor of the state is elected for a term of 4 years, and the term of the governorship begins with the taking of the oath on the third Tuesday of January of the corresponding year. The record for the cumulative length of time the governor of Texas belongs to Rick Perry - just over 14 years, from December 21, 2000 to January 20, 2015. He is followed by Bill Clements - eight years (two terms of 4 years, but with a break). Governors Allan Shivers , Price Daniel and John Connally worked for three terms, but the total duration of each of them was shorter due to two-year terms [3] [4] .
The governor is elected together with the vice-governor (or lieutenant-governor, lieutenant governor ) [5] . If the governor’s chair is for some reason vacant, the vice-governor becomes the governor. Such an amendment to the Texas constitution has been in effect only since 1999 - until then, by law, the vice-governor became the acting governor.
The current Texas governor and his family live in the in Austin [6] . The governor also has a reception room on the second floor of the Texas State Capitol [7] .
History - before the formation of the state of Texas
From 1691 to 1821, Texas was part of New Spain . During this time, they were ruled by 37 governors [8] .
From 1821 to 1835, the territory of Texas was part of Mexico and was part of the state of Coahuila and Texas ( Coahuila y Tejas ). During this time, they were ruled by 13 governors [8] .
After the revolution in 1835, a transitional government was created, and from 1836, the Republic of Texas , which had five presidents from 1836 to 1846 [9] .
Texas Governors
December 29, 1845, Texas became the 28th US state, and James Pinkney Henderson , who assumed this position on February 19, 1846, became the first governor of the state of Texas. According to the accepted numbering, Rick Perry is the 47th governor of Texas, but at the same time the 44th person occupying this position, since the inconsistent terms of the governorship were considered under different numbers ( Miriam Ferguson , Elisha Pease and Bill Clements ) [3] . During this time, only two women occupied the governor’s post — Miriam Ferguson (in 1925–1927 and 1933–1935) and Ann Richards (in 1991–1995). So far (March 2019), only two of the former Texas governors survived - Rick Perry and George Walker Bush , who resigned as governor at the end of 2000 to become President of the United States .
The distribution of Texas governors by party affiliation is shown below, as well as highlighted in the corresponding colors in the main table (separately for governors and vice-governors). Interestingly, for 105 years, from 1874 to 1979, only representatives of the Democratic Party have continuously been governors of Texas [4] .
