Early years
Jaume Balaghero was born in the Catalan city of Lleida . At an early age, he moved with his family to Barcelona , where he spent all his childhood and youth. At a local university, he studied communications, and a little later he began to study camera art under the direction of Argentinean director Hector Faver . In 1991, he was awarded a master 's degree in "Communication Sciences". In 1991-1992, he worked as a journalist in several film magazines, including as an editor and a member of the editorial board of the Kinoshok magazine, specializing in the field of dark cinema and alternative culture. From 1992 to 1995, Balaghero worked as a film journalist and radio host on La espuma de los días on Hospitalet, where he became a recognized film critic.
Career
The first steps as a director were two short films, the Bubo Baby (1991) and the Invention of Milk (1993). [2] The first success came to him after filming the short -length surrealistic film Alice (1994) on the 35-mm film , to which he also wrote the script. Critics praised the impressive and frightening atmosphere and plot implementation of the film, compared the director’s work with the work of David Cronenberg and David Lynch . As a result, the film won a prize in the “Best Short Film” nomination at the Sitges Film Festival . His next work was the short film Days Without Light (1995), which was just as successful at film festivals as the previous film, and was released on DVD in Germany and Spain. In 1996, Jaume wrote the script and directed the twelfth episode of the series “ Serie Nova Ficció, La Ciutat de la Sort ”, which was broadcast on the local Catalan television channel TV3 .
Jaume's debut as a director of feature films took place in 1999 with the release of the film Anonymous . Filmed based on Ramsey Campbell 's novel, the film has won several awards at international film festivals, including the Best Film award at the Fant-Asia Film Festival. Three years later, he directed the Darkness , which is currently regarded as one of the cult horror films of the genre. This film was the first English-language work of Jaume and was seen by people from the Miramax Films film studio , which released its much-cut version for hire in the United States in December 2004. In 2005, the director’s third ghost film, Fragility , was released , starring Calista Flockhart and Richard Roxburgh . In 2002, he co-directed a documentary on rock music. Forget everything. A film for the shooting of which he accompanied for several weeks young musicians on their tour.
In 2006, Balaghero took part in the television project " Películas para no dormir " (" Films that will not let you fall asleep "). The new version of the horror series by Narsiso Ibáñez Serrador's “ Historias Para No Dormir ” (also known as “ Stories that will not let you fall asleep ”; broadcast in 1966-67, was briefly resurrected in 1982) consisted of six thematic series Filmed by several prominent filmmakers specializing in films of this genre, originally from Catalonia and other Spanish provinces, including Alexa de la Iglesia and Mateo Gil . At the beginning of 2007, Jaume Balaghero began work on his fourth theater film Reportage [3] , the plot of which was written in the spirit of the works of the famous director George Romero , but with a twist of another director, Hideo Nakata , whom Balaghero focuses on in his work; the Japanese director believes that in the horror genre the image of the heroine is much more complex and interesting in terms of implementation, because her feelings are more mysterious than that of a man who plays the main role. Jaume also directed the thriller Deep Sleep , [4] starring Luis Tosard . [5] It is known that Balaghero wrote the script for Report 3 [6] and is the director of the expected Report 4 , [7] a prequel to the franchise , which may lead to a real rebirth of the zombie movie genre, which the audience has been waiting for more than a year.
