Biography

Lutheran. From the noble family of Stackelbergs . The son of Lieutenant General Baron Karl Karlovich Stackelberg (1816–1887) and Emilia Victoria Joanna Gauke (1821–1890), daughter of the Polish Minister of War Maurice Gauke . Had eight brothers and sisters. All brothers, like his father, served in the Life Guards Horse Regiment, three chose a military career. George rose to the rank of general from the cavalry, was awarded the Order of St. George 4th degree for distinction in the Russian-Japanese war.

He graduated from the Page Corps (1867) with a name on marble plaques, was released as a cornet in the Life Guards Horse Regiment .

Ranks: lieutenant (1871), staff captain (1873), captain (1876), colonel (1878), major general (for distinction, 1893), lieutenant general (for distinction, 1907), general from the cavalry (with dismissal) from service, 1917).

He served as regimental treasurer and head of the regimental economy, for several years he commanded the 2nd division of the Horse Regiment. He published several works on the history of the regiment: excerpts from the diary of Baron V. S. Kaulbars “Horse Guards on December 14, 1825. From the diary of the old Horse Guards ”, as well as his own works“ One and a half centuries of the Horse Guards. 1730-1880 ”and“ History of the Life Guards Horse Regiment. One and a half centuries Horse Guards. 1730-1880 ”in two volumes.

In August 1882 he was appointed head of the court music choir established by Emperor Alexander III ; at the same time he was registered in the army cavalry. In 1897, the choir was transformed into the Court Orchestra , and Baron Stackelberg was appointed its head. He headed the orchestra until May 1917. Revived the Horn Orchestra to the coronation of Alexander III.

In 1879 he became one of the founders of the St. Petersburg Society of Music Lovers (subsequently elected as its chairman). In 1900 he founded the Museum of the Court Orchestra in memory of Emperor Alexander III, to whom he transferred his own collection of musical instruments. He wrote music under the pseudonym "Ceeste".

In 1910-1912, he headed the Commission for the Improvement of the Musical Part in the Army and Navy, which developed a training system for military musicians.

He was arrested during the February Revolution , in May he was promoted to general from the cavalry and dismissed from service due to illness. He went to Finland , from 1918 - in exile in Estonia . He was a member of the White Cross charity, which helped the soldiers of the Northwest Army . He wrote several pieces of music: the march “Mortius plango” in memory of those who died for their homeland, “Prayer” in memory of Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna and others. Already after the death of the baron, his novel "Sweeping you with snow, Russia" was published.

He died in 1925 in Tallinn . He was buried in Narva , on the family site of the Ivanovo cemetery (together with his father, brothers George and Alexander).

Wife (since 1892) - Baroness Maria Vasilievna Kaulbars (1860-1932; her portraits were repeatedly painted by the artist J.F. Zionglinsky , one of them is kept in the National Museum in Warsaw in 1907), daughter of Baron Lieutenant General Vasily Romanovich Kaulbars (1798 -1888); sister of generals Nikolai and Alexander Kaulbars . She had two daughters in marriage: Dagmar (1893—?) And Helena (1894—?).

  • March 30, 2011 in Narva was a memorial day for Baron Stackelberg, organized by the association of guides of Narva, the Alexander Parish of the Lutheran Church and the St. Petersburg Museum of Music [2] .
