The parents of Leopold Joseph were the Duke of Lorraine Charles V and his wife Eleanor Maria Joseph (1653–1697), daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III .

His childhood passed in Innsbruck, where he was raised by his mother, a woman of great intelligence and strict morals; his father participated in the war with the Turks. After the death of his father in 1690, Leopold I Joseph formally becomes the Duke of Lorraine and Bara ; as regent until his coming of age the duchies ruled Eleanor Mary.

Leopold I Joseph was sent to Vienna, where he received a military education under the auspices of his uncle and godfather, Emperor Leopold I. He grew up at the Vienna court with his cousins, Joseph and Karl , both of whom were later emperors. Throughout his life, Leopold Joseph was in friendly, close relations with these two of his cousins.

In his country, Lorraine, the duke was popular and loved by the people. In March 1729, during a hunt, Leopold Joseph fell into a pit and died a few days later.

Family

On October 13, 1698, in Fontainebleau, Leopold I Joseph married Princess Elizabeth Charlotte of Orleans (1676-1744), daughter of the Duke of Orleans, Philip I and Duchess Elizabeth of Pfalz . In this marriage, Leopold had fourteen children, and among them - the future emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Franz I Stefan:

  1. Leopold, Crown Prince of Lorraine (August 26, 1699 - April 2, 1700), died in infancy
  2. (October 21, 1700 - May 4, 1711), died of smallpox
  3. Louise Christina Lorraine (November 13, 1701 - November 18, 1701), died in infancy
  4. Maria Gabriela Charlotte of Lorraine (December 30, 1702 - May 11, 1711), died of smallpox
  5. (January 28, 1704 - May 10, 1711), died of smallpox
  6. Josephine Gabriela Lorraine (February 16, 1705 - March 25, 1708), died in childhood
  7. Gabriela Louise of Lorraine (March 4, 1706 - June 13, 1710), died in childhood
  8. Leopold Clemens, Crown Prince of Lorraine (April 25, 1707 - June 4, 1723), died of smallpox
  9. Franz I, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (December 8, 1708 - August 18, 1765), married to Maria Theresa of Austria , had children
  10. Eleanor of Lorraine (June 4, 1710 - July 28, 1710), died in infancy
  11. Elizabeth Theresa (October 15, 1711 - July 3, 1741), married to the King of Sardinia and Piedmont Carl Emmanuel III , were children
  12. Karl Alexander Lorraine (December 12, 1712 - July 4, 1780), married to Maria Anna of Austria , there were no surviving children
  13. Anna Charlotte of Lorraine (May 17, 1714 - November 7, 1773), died unmarried
  14. stillborn daughter (November 28, 1715)
