History
In the first 50 years of British possession (since 1800), coins of the Order of Malta , Spanish, Sicilian, English, French and Austrian coins were in circulation on the island. Pound sterling in 1855 was declared the only legal tender , but order and Sicilian gold and silver coins remained in circulation until 1886.
In 1914, the Government of Malta issued the first Maltese banknotes in pounds, shillings and pence; their issue was caused by a lack of coins in circulation. In 1915, they were seized and replaced by British banknotes. In 1939, due to lack of cash and loss of connection with the Bank of England, the Government of Malta again issued banknotes in pounds and shillings. Banknotes of this issue were in circulation until 1972.
In 1949, a law was passed introducing the Maltese pound, equivalent to the pound. On September 20, 1949, Bank of England banknotes lost their legal tender. Coins of Great Britain remained in circulation, since Maltese exchange coins were not issued. In November 1967, after the devaluation of the pound, the Maltese pound was also devalued.
In 1969, the production of banknotes with inscriptions in two languages began: English and Maltese. The name of the currency in English was indicated - "Pound", in Maltese - "Lira".
After decimalizing the pound, the division of the Maltese pound was also changed in February 1971, the pound was divided by 100 pence and 1000 miles. In May 1972, the issuance of Maltese coins began, replacing British coins in shillings and pence in circulation [1] . Starting December 26, 1971, the exchange rate of the Maltese pound to the pound was changed: 1.025 pounds = 1 Maltese pound. Since June 23, 1972, the rate was established on the basis of a basket of currencies.
On January 23, 1983, the Maltese pound was renamed the Maltese lira [2] .
