History

The name of the quarter literally means “six trees”, it appeared around the 1660s. The trees, six large and old dzelkvs , marked the quarter. The first three were felled, and the rest were destroyed during World War II [1] . Another legend says that “roppongi” are six daimyo , who lived nearby in the Edo period , and everyone in the name had a hieroglyph “tree” or a type of tree. Roppongi was sparsely populated before the Meiji restoration , but there was always a lively movement in the quarter. Also in Roppongi in 1626, the shogun's wife Tokugawa Hidetada was cremated [2] .

In 1890, the third guard of the Imperial Japanese Army was transferred near Roppongi (today the Pacific bureau of the Stars and Stripes newspaper is located there). Soldiers triggered the growth of nightclubs, slowing down due to the Great Kanto earthquake , which equalized the area with land in 1923 [2] . From 1878 to 1947 Roppongi belonged to the quarter of Azzab .

After World War II, during which Roppongi was again destroyed, this time by bombing, the US Army and Allied forces occupied several buildings this quarter, marking the beginning of Roppongi’s reputation as a haikokudzin quarter. Bars, restaurants, nightclubs and brothels, which were visited by both soldiers and Japanese, appeared near American military facilities.

From the 1960s, Roppongi began to attract visitors to its disco scene, but many clubs closed in the recession that followed the collapse of the market in 1989.

Roppongi began to grow rapidly in 2002–2003, when the high-rise complexes Izumi Garden Tower and Roppongi Hills were built. Thanks to them, Roppongi began to turn into a business center. The trend continued the Tokyo Midtown tower and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel .

Nightlife

Roppongi has many bars, nightclubs, strip clubs, restaurants, clubs with hostesses , cabarets and other places of entertainment. Roppongi love foreign experts , students, businessmen, as well as the American military in the leave.

Roppongi clubs are of any size, and some large institutions connected with the yakuza are closed by the government [3] . Also in the quarter there are several clubs where foreign performers perform.

Crossroads

Roppongi in the past had the ill fame of a quarter with a large number of yakuza , both as customers and business owners or racketeers . Despite the fact that their influence in Roppongi is still felt, they transferred the center of activity from this quarter [4] [5] .

In 2006, Nigerian immigrants began to open in Roppongi bars and nightclubs that aggressively advertised. In 2009 and 2010, there was a series of robberies of previously intoxicated visitors to “Nigerian” bars, as a result of which the US Embassy warned its citizens against visiting some Roppongi bars. An investigation of the Japan Times newspaper in July showed that, although customer soldering did take place, it usually did not pursue any criminal goals, and clients of non- “Nigerian” bars presented the same complaints, where owners mixed drinks with alcohol to increase profits [6] [ 7] [8] .
