Biography
George Bentham was born in 1800 in Stock, near Portsmouth . In 1814-1827 he lived in France, studied at the Faculty of Theology in Montcuban . He studied law in London, but soon left the legal field and devoted himself exclusively to botany. Since 1861, he began to engage in botanical research in the Kew Botanical Garden .
Bentham’s major work “Genera Plantarum ...” (together with Hooker , 1862–1883) is a miraculous monument created with amazing and colossal knowledge, patience and scientific conscientiousness; he ensured for a long time the system of plant classification they proposed. In this classification, somewhat similar to the classification of the Decandol , families are arranged in groups, or rows; this method seemed less natural than the Lindley , Endlicher, and Broniard systems, and English scientists, not without some hesitation, preferred the Broniard system.
In 1830, he was secretary of the horticulture society and subsequently president of the London Linnaeus Society (1861–1874).
In the interests of science, Bentham traveled almost all of Europe. He owns a description of the flora of Brazil (1859-1862), Australia (1863-1878), India , and the environs of Hong Kong .
He was a foreign correspondent member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (since 1872) and a member of the Paris Academy of Sciences (since 1875).
George Bentham died in London on September 10, 1884.
