General information
The main directions of the Institute’s scientific activity is the implementation of fundamental scientific research in the direction of studying biological diversity in the North-East of Asia, studying the functioning, organization principles and adaptive strategies of northern populations, communities and ecosystems, developing the scientific foundations for the protection, reproduction and rational use of biological resources of the North [ 1] .
History
The foundations of the institute were laid in 1968, when the Department of Biological Problems of the North, consisting of a laboratory of zoology and parasitology and a laboratory of physiology, was created as part of the North-Eastern Complex Research Institute (NECR) of the SB RAS. In 1972, the Department was transformed into an independent Institute (at that time it already had 9 laboratories) [2]

From 1970 to 1995, a biological station of the Institute of Biological Problems of the North of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences operated on the island of Ayopechan , where life cycles and parasitic helminth systems were studied in tundra landscapes of northeast Asia [3] .
