General Information

Zarina is one of two children in her family; her sister's name is Alice.

In 1999, the Diyas family moved to the Czech Republic , changing their place of residence due to the work of their parents. Here Zarina soon became interested in tennis and began to train at one of the Prague academies. [3] Since 2013, has been training with Chinese specialist Alan Ma at his academy in Guangzhou . [four]

Sports career

Career start

Zarina was already successful in her junior years: without even playing in the senior round before her sixteen years old, she still managed to rise in the Top20 of the local rating. At the beginning of 2008 - at the age of 14 - Diyas won the prestigious Junior tournament in Czech Prerov , which is a cheap alternative to the Australian Open for many European juniors. In the fall of the same year, she reached the semifinals of more status competitions in Osaka and Bradenton .

Training at the Prague Academy and the first successes in the junior round allowed Diyas to catch the eye of local tennis functionaries and in the fall of 2007 she was given the chance to make her debut in adult tournaments: the organizers of the Bratislava 100-thousand-strong team gave her a special invitation to qualify for their tournament. The first chance was followed by several more, the fourth of which: in the fall of 2008, on the 25-thousandth in Astana , brought the first noticeable success - the native of Alma-Ata won five matches one after another and won her first professional title. The success of the young compatriot was noted by the national federation - in February of the following year, she was invited to gather the national team and even played one match for her in the Federation Cup (paired: together with Galina Voskoboeva ). The season of that year itself was held with emphasis on the protest competitions: in the spring, Diyas twice made it to the quarter-finals at the 50,000th in Japan ; later in the summer, she won another 25-thousander (on the ground in Germany ), and also made it to the quarterfinals of the semi-domestic Prague WTA tournament , using special permission from the organizers. The advance from the Czechs was all the more realized that one of the two victories was won at the eighth racket of the local sowing of Petra Kvitova . This series of successful results allowed Zarina to almost complete the year in Top200, and at the end of August to make her debut in the qualification of Grand Slam tournaments: at the US Open .

In 2010, the successful series in the protest was continued: the Kazakhstani tennis player consolidated its ranking position due to less and less random results: local successes in small ITF series tournaments alternated with attempts to play WTA competitions, where despite many relatively equal games with rivals from the top hundred Zarina left the court every time a loser. In October, they managed to reverse the unsuccessful series: at the Moscow competition of the association, Diyas not only overcame the selection, but was also able to make it to the quarter-finals by beating Khisela Dulko and Elena Yankovich (the then seventh racket of the world). This surge allowed the Kazakhstan athlete to improve her best single ratings for the first time to complete the season in the Top200 local classification. The following year, Zarina began her season in January: first reaching the final of the selection at the Australian Open , and then playing a series of tournaments in East and Southeast Asia. In April, Diyas tried to play a series of more status tournaments in Europe, but did not achieve any noticeable successes and by July returned to Asian tournaments again. The progress in compiling the personal calendar almost yielded no results and only in September Zarina achieved local success having made her way from qualification to the second round of the base of the association's tournament in Guangzhou . In autumn, an operation was performed on a shoulder that worried an athlete and the next year, 2012, Diyas started only at the end of April and spent the whole time at Asian ITF tournaments , where due to constant playing practice she tried to get rid of problematic moments in her game and restore her former self-confidence. Local successes made it possible to complete the year near the border of the second hundred.

2013-14

In the 2013 season, the search for opportunities to improve the game and the rating continued: Zarina continued to draw up her schedule with an emphasis on Asian tournaments, and by the fall she began to not only play there, but also train outside the tournament, signing a contract with the academy in Guangzhou . This decision gradually began to justify itself: by the end of October, the results began to improve gradually: Diyas successfully won a series of 25 thousandths in Japan , and then reached the final of the 50 thousandths in Taipei . Working with Alan Ma yielded the main result a year later: starting the season with two finals at the 25,000th in Hong Kong (singles and paired up where Diyas had not been very productive before and made her way to the title match of the protest competition for the first time), she then first overcame the selection at the Grand Slam tournament: at the Australian Open, Zarina won five matches in a row, making it to the third round of the tournament, where she was stopped by Simone Halep . The remainder of the hard season brought the title to the 50-thousandth in Quanzhou , as well as local successes in WTA competitions. The next peak of the form came at the end of May: a Kazakhstani athlete made it to the quarter-finals of the association's tournament in Strasbourg , and a few weeks later reached the final of the grass 75-thousander in Nottingham . The European season ended at Wimbledon , where after defeating Vera Zvonareva and Karl Suarez Navarro Diyas made their way into the fourth round.

The American hard series was played without much success, but it allowed to bring the peak of form to the start of the US Open , where, despite minor shoulder problems, Zarina made it to the third round in singles and the quarterfinals were paired (together with Xu Yifan, she managed to outplay the strong alliances played Raquel Cops-Jones / Abigail Spears and Lucia Gradecka / Michaela Krycek ). In the fall, health problems were resolved and the Kazakh athlete first played a good bunch of Chinese tournaments of the Association’s senior premier series , and then made it to her first final at a similar level: in Osaka , where Zarina was able to realize her fifth seeding number in four victories and participation in the title match against Samantha Stosur . where the more experienced Australian took over. The multiple successes of the year allowed Diyas to significantly improve his rating: having won more than a hundred positions, she finished the season with the 34th racket of the world in a single rating.

2018

On January 4, 2018, Zarina Diaz lost to Maria Sharapova and was unable to make it to the semifinal of the WTA International series tournament in Shenzhen, China [5] .

February 5, 2018 Zarina Diaz became the "Best Tennis Player of the Country" in the ranking of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) [6] .

March 9, 2018 Zarina could not get into the second round of the tournament in Indian Wells , losing to the famous Serena Williams with a score of 5: 7, 3: 6 [7] .

But on March 22, Zarina in the 1/32 tournament of the Premier series in Miami for the first time beat the two-time champion of the Grand Slam tournaments (6: 1, 6: 3), she turned out to be Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova [8] .

At the French Open, she reached the second round, losing to Japanese Naomi Osaka in two sets. At the US Open, she was unlucky with a draw and in the first round, Zarina lost to Carolina Plishkova.

National Team and National Tournaments

The growing interest in national tennis in Kazakhstan in the second half of the 2000s led to increased funding for the national federation and, due to the not very high level of tennis players available in the country, the massive naturalization of foreign athletes and the search for young tennis players with Kazakhstani roots in other countries. The fruits of the implementation of the first concept were the acquisition of local citizenship by several players from the former USSR and Bulgaria , and the second concept helped to support the nascent career of several juniors, one of which was Zarina, who lived and trained in the Czech Republic at that time. In 2009, she was first given the opportunity to play for the national team in the Federation Cup . The first period of stay in the national team Diyas lasted for three years, during which she took part in seven games (usually with noticeably weaker opponents), having won five of them.
