Biography
Born on October 12, 1830 in Vienna , Austria, in the family of attorney Ignaz Mayr and Fra Rosin (Rosina Holzer). In 1856 he received the degree of doctor of medicine [2] [3] .
In 1862-1901, he identified and described more than 500 new species for science and 58 new genera of ants, including Acromyrmex , Anochetus , Aphaenogaster , Camponotus , Formicoxenus , Leptothorax , Monomorium , Tetramorium and many others [4] . They processed unique collections of ants from Baltic amber (1868), the Tibetan expedition of Przhevalsky and the Turkestan expedition of A. P. Fedchenko and from the materials of the round-the-world cruise of the frigate Novara . In addition, Mayr studied bugs and parasitic Hymenoptera (his collection included 2960 species of Chalcidoidea and 923 species of Cynipidae , and also 1350 species of Hemiptera ) [2] [3] .
Died July 14, 1908 in the city of Vienna , Austria [2] [3] .
Recognition
Three genera of hymenoptera were named after Gustav Myra, such as Mayria Forel (1879), Eumayria Ashmead (1887) and Mayriella Forel (1902). Approximately 50 more species in various groups of insects carry the specific epithet Mayri , including:
- Apterostigma mayri (Forel, 1893)
- Camponotus mayri Forel, 1879
- Carebara mayri (Forel, 1901)
- Dorylus mayri Santschi, 1912
- Monomorium mayri Forel, 1902
- Myrmelachista mayri Forel, 1886
- Sericomyrmex mayri Forel, 1912
- Rhoptromyrmex mayri Forel, 1912
- Tetramorium mayri (Mann, 1919)
- Tetraponera mayri (Forel, 1901)
In 1876, Mayr was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit with a crown.
He was elected a member of many scientific societies [2] [3] :
- Zoologisch-botanischen Gesellschaft in Wien (1851)
- Entomologischen Vereines in Stettin (1852)
