YMF262 , also known as OPL3 (OPL stands for FM Operator Type-L ) is an electronic component, a sound generator chip, developed by Yamaha . It is an improved version of the Yamaha YM3812 chip (OPL2). It is best known for using Sound Blaster Pro 2.0 for IBM-PC compatible computers in a sound card.

The capabilities of the YMF262 are similar to the YM3812, with a number of improvements:

  • Twice as many channels (18 instead of 9)
  • Simple stereo pan control (output of each channel left, right or in the middle of the panorama)
  • Four new waveforms (alternative sinusoidal, humpback sinusoidal, square, logarithmic sawtooth)
  • 4-operator synthesis mode (combines channels in pairs, maximum 6 channels)
  • Faster response to commands (OPL2 required significant pauses between sending commands, which slowed down the program)
