History
On the site of the Prussian fortress of Vostopolo captured and burned by the Teutonic knights in 1276, in 1352 the castle of Zaalau was erected. The name comes from the Prussian word “zal” - “salt” (there were once salt mines in these places) [3] .

During World War II, on the night of January 23, 1945, Zaalau was taken by soldiers of the 11th and 84th divisions of the 11th Guards Army [5] .
