The Lancet is a weekly peer-reviewed general medical journal . One of the most famous, oldest and most authoritative general journals in medicine [1] . The Lancet was founded in 1823 by Thomas Walkley , an English surgeon who named him after a lancet , a surgical instrument. It published original research and review articles, editorials, book reviews, correspondence, news reviews, and case histories. The Lancet was purchased by Elsevier in 1991. Since 1995, Richard Horton became the chief editor . The magazine has editorial offices in London, New York and Beijing.

In 2012, the Journal Citation Reports organization rated the impact factor of the journal as the second among general medical journals at 39.06 points, after The New England Journal of Medicine , which had a score of 51.658 [2] .
Specialized Magazines
The Lancet also has several specialized journals, each with a parent name: The Lancet Neurology ( Neurology ), The Lancet Oncology ( Oncology ) and The Lancet Infectious Diseases ( Infectious Diseases ). They also publish original studies and reviews. These three journals have built up a significant reputation as important journals in their specialties. According to Journal Citation Reports published by Thomson Reuters, the impact factor of The Lancet Neurology is 21.66, The Lancet Oncology is 17.76, and The Lancet Infectious Diseases is 16.14 [2] . There is also an online student magazine called The Lancet Student .
Political Expression
The Lancet Magazine has held a political position on a number of important medical and non-medical issues. Among the latter is a criticism of WHO , when this organization recognized the effectiveness of homeopathy as a treatment option. [3] In addition, in 2003 the magazine called for outlawing tobacco .
