Biography
Willis Earl Beale grew up in Chicago [3] . In 2005, he was demobilized from the army due to illness and returned to his hometown, where he got a job as a security guard in the Sears Tower [4] . From August 2007 to June 2010 he lived in Albuquerque , at first he was homeless , earned low-skilled labor, often on a night shift [4] . Then Bill began to record music and distributed it on CD-R in public places throughout Albuquerque [4] . He also put up his own drawings with the address and phone number; there was such an appeal on the leaflets: “Call - and I will sing you a song. Write and I will make a drawing for you ” [5] . In 2009, one of these drawings appeared on the cover of Found magazine, and an interview with a musician was published in the same issue [5] . In 2011, thanks to the response of readers, the publishers of the magazine decided to release in a limited edition (200 copies) the box set The Willis Earl Beal Special Collection , which included Beale's home-recorded album, his drawings and poems [4] [5] . At the end of the year, Willis Earl Beale signed a contract with Hot Charity ( imprint of independent record company XL Recordings ) [5] . On February 17, 2012, his first single was released on the label “Evening's Kiss”, the video accompaniment for the song consists of drawings by the musician himself. Beal's debut album, titled Acousmatic Sorcery, was released on April 2, 2012 [6] .
Style and influence
Willis Earl Beale gained a reputation as a marginal musician [5] . Listeners compared him with Daniel Johnston and Jandek , whose fan is Bill. He also called Tom Waits a favorite performer. [7]
