The surname Peredrius belongs to a rare, but at the same time one of the oldest types of Slavic family names, formed from a personal nickname.
The tradition of giving nicknames from ancient times existed among the Slavs and persisted until the XVII century. Often nicknames reflected some vivid qualities of a person’s appearance or character. The personal nickname Peredriy was formed from the old Ukrainian adjective "peredery", meaning "torn, peeled." Most likely, the nickname Peredrius could be awarded to a person who, for any reason, wore torn clothes. It is possible that such a name was given, for example, to the youngest child in the family, who was forced to carry clothes for older brothers and sisters.
Also, one cannot exclude the possibility that the person himself could be “torn”, that is, have numerous scars received in battles or as a result of any accident.
Bearers of similar nicknames are found in various registers of the Zaporizhzhya Army. For example, in the register for 1581, the Cossacks of Peredery and Semen Perereri are mentioned as a brother, and in 1649 a similar nickname was worn by the Cossack of the Smilovsky hundreds of Chigirinsky regiment of the Zaporizhzhya Army, Protsyk Peredery.
In the dictionary of Old Russian personal proper names in 1903, Tupikov N.M. mentions the name Perederi - "Poltava Cossack Regiment, nickname Perederi", 1683.
In “Russian surnames” B.O. Unbegaun notes: “In the Ukrainian language a peculiar type of nouns in ий-((Ukrainian-й-)) has developed, which also act as surnames, tend to be nouns and are formed in most cases from the verb stem ... ... Peredery - “tear out”. ”
The stress falls on the last syllable.
