Biography
Born in a butcher's family. He studied at Kiel University , then became a pharmacist. In 1823, he first went to South Africa, where he worked as a pharmacist. At the same time, Eclon was collecting samples of South African plants, and by 1828 , when he returned to Europe, he already had a fairly extensive botanical collection. In 1829, he, along with Philip Zeiger, again went to Africa. Upon their return in 1833, they began processing samples of the plants they collected. In 1838, Eklon left for South Africa for the third time. He died in 1868 in Cape Town .
The herbarium of Eklon was sold to various universities in Europe. Most of it was acquired by Kiel University (KIEL). Also, many samples were purchased by Ferdinand Muller and stored in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne (MEL).
