Dusseldorf, thanks to its position, has been a port city since its inception. Until the end of the XIX century, the moorings were located on the Rhine embankment along the city wall . On May 30, 1896, a new Düsseldorf harbor was opened, in the waters of which was one of the most modern ports of its time, the entrance to which was in the area of the current Reinkni Bridge. In connection with the ever-increasing commodity turnover, the port water area was already expanded in 1904 .
Due to the First World War and the subsequent French occupation , as well as the global economic crisis, the turnover of the Port of Dusseldorf was significantly reduced. Only in 1934 he was able to achieve the volume of 1913 .
From the first day of the Second World War, the port of Dusseldorf was completely given for the needs of the military economy . It was one of the most important ports that served to send military equipment. It was the fact of the port’s specialization for military purposes that during the allied bombing of Düsseldorf harbor was one of the main thrusts. After the last bombardments in January 1945, the port’s activities ceased completely.
Three years after that the port did not function. Since the spring of 1948, the port again begins to be used for river transport. By 1954, the volume of trade reached the prewar level. In the early 1970s, as a result of the next economic crisis, trade again fell, and in 1974 the decision was made to reduce the port's water area by 33 hectares.
In 1982, the Rheinturm television tower was erected in the harbor, the buildings of the West German Radio were built some time later and the harbor was named Media Harbor ( German: Medienhafen) . "New Customs" , built in 1996 - 1998, designed by American architect Frank Gehry .
Initially, it was planned that the buildings under construction would be used exclusively by companies working in the media sector, but very soon it became clear that the number of office space created for this was many times greater than those required by these companies. Office space is sold or leased to companies specializing in consulting , real estate, and fashion companies. Today, approximately 600 companies with over 7,600 employees are located in Düsseldorf harbor. Approximately 16% of rented space is occupied by law firms. Media companies account for only 9% of all companies located in Hafen.
Also in Hafen is widely developed entertainment industry - there are many restaurants, clubs, as well as the largest disco in the city. Now the question of creating housing estates is also being actively raised, but the proximity to industrial enterprises does not yet allow to resolve this issue positively.
