History

The origin of Safi goes back to the inhabitants of the ancient kingdom of Gandhar and the related Nuristanis . The most famous mention of Safi in Afghan history refers to the uprising against Aurangzeb in 1668. The uprising broke out because of the murder of the girl of this tribe by the General of the Mughal Empire . In response, Safi killed the general. When the news of the assassination of the general reached Aurangzeb, he demanded that the tribe extradite the murderers, but the elders refused and thereby defied the emperor. Aurangzeb set off with a large army against Safi and their allies, among whom were Khattak , Afridiya , Shinwari , Mohmand under the leadership of Khattak Khushal Khan . According to Afghan sources, Aurangzeb suffered a humiliating defeat, losing 40,000 soldiers [3] .

Currently, the Safi tribe is resisting the Taliban regime [4] .
