On January 14, 1945, the division began forcing the Vistula 14 kilometers north-west of Magnushev . In this place in the middle of the Vistula was the island of Kempa Kanarska , turned by the defending German units into a major stronghold. The defense consisted of 3 lines of trenches reinforced with barriers and engineering structures. Deep trenches were dug along the banks of the Vistula and Pilica , and the banks of the rivers themselves reached a height of 8 meters. Bogdanov’s company was part of Captain Savostin’s battalion and was in the second echelon of the offensive. The fighters of the company, crossing the river on thin ice, together with the battalion of Captain Mamatov, who were in the first echelon, freed the town of Pulco and advanced towards Podgužice . Having penetrated into the German defense, the company captured the bridgehead , which contributed to the successful crossing of the entire battalion across the river [1] .
