Overview
The album was based on a concert at the Civic Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento on August 1, 1964. There were also recordings from a concert on December 21, 1963 (in particular, the announcement of the entertainer Fred Vale at the very beginning of the album). Of the 13 tracks, only five are written by members of The Beach Boys; the rest are cover versions of other artists' hits: “The Little Old Lady from Pasadena” by Jan and Dean , “Long, Tall Texan”, “Monster Mash” by Boris Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers (that's why Mike Love was jokingly called Boris before the song) Love), instrumental piece “Let's Go Trippin '” by Dick Dale , “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow” The Rivingtons , “ The Wanderer ” Dion , “Graduation Day” The Four Freshmen (before the start of the song, the musicians pay due attention The Beach Boys style), “ Johnny B. Goode ” by Chuck Berry . Performed by The Beach Boys, these songs first appeared on this album.
Striving for perfection, Brian Wilson subjected the original live recordings to a serious revision: in August 1964, many instruments and vocals were re-recorded, and the songs “ Fun, Fun, Fun ” and “ I Get Around ” include elements of the original studio recordings. Paradoxically, by the time the album was released, Brian Wilson decided not to take part in the group's concerts and focus on the work in the studio.
