General Information
Edouard is a hereditary tennis player: his father Christophe (b. 1957) in the 1970s and 1980s he also played tennis professionally, entered the Top-30 of the singles rating, won two doubles at this level and reached the 1983 Roland Garros semi-final in singles, beating 1 / 4 finals in three sets the first racket of the world by Jimmy Connors (defeat in the semifinals by Yannick Noah ); his mother, Alexandrin Vaduen, is an artist.
Father brought Edward to tennis at an early age. The Frenchman’s favorite cover is grass, the best strokes are actions by the net.
Sports career
- Early years
Edouard’s junior career was not very successful: several senior team competitions ended with the first and last participation in Roland Garros .
In 2001, Roger-Wasslen's adult career began: the Frenchman tried his hand at the ITF Futures and ITF Satellites series competitions. From time to time, Edouard receives special invitations to tournaments of the older ATP Challenger category. The first successes came in 2002, when he managed to reach the title match of the ITF Futures tournaments several times. In 2003, the national federation gives Edouard the opportunity to play for the first time the qualification of the Grand Slam home tournament - Edouard justifies his confidence by going through the round, having beat Joachim Johansson .
Since July 2003, Roger-Wasslen has gradually switched to ATP Challenger tournaments . A series of stable results, the largest of which was the semifinal at the Kiev Challenger, allowed him to rise in the Top300 single-player rating for the season. After a year, the semi-finals at tournaments of these categories are becoming more regular, which is why the Frenchman rises higher and higher in the ranking, having secured a place in the Top200 at the end of the 2004 season. In September of the same year, Roger-Wasslen first entered the main draw of the ATP main stage tournament : he qualifies for the Shanghai tournament, where he immediately wins the match. Gradually getting used to the new level of rivals, Edouard becomes an increasingly serious force at a similar level - in 2005 he wins his first “challenge” - in French Montauban .
At the same time, more and more high-quality performances in doubles begin to turn out - since 2005, Edward has been annually several times in the title matches at the Challengers and periodically wins. It is not possible to immediately combine single and double tournaments with maximum utility for both categories, and in 2006 the Frenchman went through a recession that threw him at some point in the third hundred rating, but having solved his problems, Roger-Wasslen broke into Rambler's Top100 in 2007 having chalked up two exits to the third round of the Grand Slam tournaments at once (in France, having got there thanks to a special invitation, and having passed the selection before Wimbledon ).
In 2008, the Frenchman could not immediately be competitive at a new level: having survived a series of defeats in the early stages, Edouard gradually emerged from the crisis and by the end of the year consolidated in the middle of the second hundred.
- 2009—2014
The next improvement in the rating was smoother - the Frenchman gradually gathered himself an increasingly high single rating, periodically giving out tournaments, where he fought and beat the Top50 players: in 2009, he reached the quarter finals in Tokyo , knocking out Juan Martin del Potro and Jürgen Meltzer from the tournament . Gradually entering the necessary playing conditions, Edar in the pre-Olympic season 2011/12 gives another successful series of performances at the Challengers, periodically reaches the late stages of the main tournaments, and by mid-June he rises to the highest position in the then career in a single rating, becoming 67 racket of the world. In the future, the Frenchman again for some time lowered the quality of his results, for a while again left the first hundred, but gradually was able to establish his game again and in February for the first time played in the final of the competition of the main round of the association: in Delray Beach , where in the semifinal Roger-Wasslen managed to get through John Isner . Local successes continued further, thanks to which by the end of September Eduard not only repeated his best result in the ranking, but also slightly improved it; the main success in this period is reaching the semi-finals of the tournament in Nice . where Roger Wasslen outplayed then Top20 player Sam Querrey .
In 2012, permanent successes in the “challengers” in the doubles flow and to perform in the competitions of the main round - Roger-Wasslen and Nicolas Mayu immediately win three tournaments of the base category one after another. Thanks to this, by October Edouard rises in the Top40 pair classification. A year later, the Frenchman continued his stable performances in pairs, regularly changing partners, and by the grass season he was able to agree on permanent cooperation with Rohan Bopannaya , with the prospect of further qualitative growth in the results. At Wimbledon, the international duo won several protracted matches and reached the semi-finals, where in five games they lost to the Brian brothers . In the summer, Rohan made a short pause in his performances, and Edward tried himself in combination with Nicolas May and Igor Seisling : after playing three small tournaments, he reached the finals at each and won two titles. In Cincinnati , collaboration with the Indian resumed. The alliance with relative successes played out together until the end of the season, marking this period of cooperation with the title in Tokyo and the rise of Roger Wasslen in the Top20 rating, but in 2014 the cooperation did not continue.
The increase in pair results caused a single-player results crisis, where the level of the strongest competition of the protest proved to be beyond the Frenchman's strength. The local recession ended at the end of the season, when Edouard reached the semifinals of the tournament in Basel , having beaten Stanislas Wavrinka . After the off-season pause, the successful series continued - the Frenchman made it to the final of the prize in Chennai , and later adding several third circles to major tournaments due to which he first returned, and then improved his best single-player rating. The rise was again followed by a decline in results, caused, among other things, by small knee problems, due to which Edward took a short pause in performances in the summer [2] , and after returning to the game he won only one singles meeting before the end of the season, having rolled down in the rating at the end of hundreds. In the same year, the quality growth of Roger-Wasslen's results continued as a pair: playing most of the time with compatriot Julien Benneto Eduard in May interrupted a long unbeaten French series at the Grand Slam home tournament, replaying Marcel Granollers and Mark Lopez in the title match. In the future, both Frenchmen climbed to the Top10 ranking, making it to the final of the Masters series tournament in Shanghai and reaching the semifinals of the Final Competition .
In February 2019, together with the Croatian Ivan Dodig, they won the tournament in Montpellier (France), defeating the Bonzi B. / Oan A. pair in two sets 6-4 6-3 in the final.
