Tukwila (processor)

Tukwila is the code name of the Itanium family of Intel processors , following Itanium 2 and Montecito . Released in 2010, in 2012 it was replaced by Itanium 9500 (Poulson), in 2017 - Itanium 9700 (Kittson).

In March 2005, Intel announced work on a new Itanium processor , codenamed Tukwila, which was scheduled for 2007 . Tukwila has four processor cores and will replace the Itanium processor bus with the new Common System Interface , which will also be used by Xeon processors [1] . A year later, Intel postponed the start date for the shipment of Tukwila processors to the customer in 2008 [2] .

The Itanium 9300 series of processors, codenamed Tukwila, was introduced on February 8, 2010 [3] .

The processor is manufactured using 65 nm technology, contains four cores [4] , up to 24 MB of cache on the processor chip, supports Hyper-Threading technology and has an integrated memory controller . The correction of errors that occur during memory exchange cycles has been implemented. Also, the Tukwila processor supports the new QPI processor bus, which is a major breakthrough for Itanium-based systems. Peak interprocessor performance was 96 GB / s, peak memory subsystem performance was 34 GB / s. Together with QuickPath, the processor contains an integrated memory controller and the memory interface directly uses the QPI interface for direct access to other processors and input-output controllers ( English I / O hubs ).

QuickPath is also used in Intel Nehalem processor microarchitectures , making it likely that the Tukwila and Nehalem processors will be able to use the same chipset [5] . Tukwila will combine four memory managers, each of which, through separate memory controllers [6], supports many DDR3 DIMMs , similar to the marketed Xeon processor , codenamed Beckton , based on the Nehalem core [7] .

The world's first microprocessor containing 2 billion transistors [8] .
