Aalto University ( Finnish. Aalto-yliopisto , Swedish. Aalto-universitetet ) is a Finnish university formed by the merger of three higher educational institutions in the city of Helsinki : the Helsinki Polytechnic Institute (founded in 1849), the Higher School of Economics (founded in 1904) and the Institute of Arts , design and architecture (founded in 1871). The close relationship between science, business and art is designed to foster innovative research in interdisciplinary fields.

In 2015, in the ranking of the reputable British company QS Quacquarelli Symonds, the university ranked 139th in the overall ranking of the best universities in the world and 17th in the field of architecture and art [2] . Also, according to Microsoft Research, the university ranks 21st [3] in the world of machine learning - an extensive branch of computer science . It should also be noted that the university’s MBA program has “triple accreditation”, which only 74 business schools worldwide can boast of [4] .
Among the alumni and professors of Aalto University, Nobel laureate Arturi Virtanen , Frank Rosenblatt Award winner Teuvo Kohonen , physicist Gunnar Nordström, as well as world-famous architect Alvar Aalto , in whose honor the university was named.

History
The university was founded on January 1, 2010 by merging the Helsinki Polytechnic Institute , the Higher School of Economics and the Higher School of Arts and Design in Helsinki [5] .
In 2012, it was announced that, as part of the three-year AppCampus program, Microsoft and Nokia are investing nine million euros each in Aalto University to develop mobile applications and services for Windows smartphones, as well as other Nokia phone operating systems, such as Symbian . [6]
The University’s Technology Research Center (VTT) believes that the opening up of 3D printing in Finland will bring numerous opportunities for Finnish business [7] .
In 2014, in connection with the economy program, the university significantly reduced the number of technical staff [8] , and in the period 2015-2018 it will lay off several hundred teachers and employees [9] [10] .
In February 2019, all three universities that are part of the university moved from the Töölö district to a single complex in Otaniemi. The official opening of the new campus will take place in May 2019 [11] .
